Once Upon a Place Storytelling Workshop
On Wednesday 7th October, Oisín McGann visited our classroom. It was part of the Once Upon a Place, Laureate na nÓg storytelling tour.
First Oisín asked us about the books that we like to read. He was very impressed by all of the authors that know of. Óisin told us that he writes books and he also illustrates them. He showed us his writing notebook that he carries with him at all times. We had a lot of questions about his notebook, like what would happen if he lost it, or if there were no pages left in his notebook and he had a really good idea. Oisín told us that he thinks about stories all the time before he starts writing them, and that he is always looking for interesting things to write about.
Next Oisín showed us an original story he had written on four A4 pages. We were amazed to see that the same story was 64 pages when it was transformed into a book. We talked about why this was; the words (text) are bigger in the book and the book had lovely illustrations. Oisín told us that if he works really quickly, he can illustrate a book in a month.
After that, Oisín introduced us to Mad Grandad, a character in his books. He read Mad Grandad's flying saucer and Mad Grandad and the Kleptoes to us. The books were very funny.
Finally, Oisín drew a picture of Mad Grandad for us. He explained to us that when you are starting a drawing, you first draw lightly with a pencil to plan your drawing. After that, you can go over it with a marker. Oisín informed us that he will draw a picture three times. We really enjoyed our storytelling workshop, and we are excited to read about the other adventures Mad Grandad will have.
